A little bit about me

I was diagnosed in 2008 with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) as well as infiltrating lobular carcinoma (ILC) of my right breast. I was 44 years old at that time. My cancer tested positive for the growth protein called Her2neu+. I was triple over-expressed and went through 12 month of Herceptin infusions for the Her2Neu, along with 5 1/2 months of Taxotere and Carboplatin chemo-therapy following my single breast mastectomy and implant reconstruction. My cancer was also positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors and I was prescribed Tamoxifen. I tried taking this oral hormone blocker for 5 1/2 months with extreme side effects of leg and foot cramping that made it impossible to walk or sleep. I decided to stop taking Tamoxifen. In June of 2010 I was declared NED (no evidence of disease). Since that time I have been diagnosed with Anti-Parietal Antibody which makes it impossible for my body to absorb vitamin B12 through my diet. This condition was discovered 2 years after chemotherapy ended but I had begun to feel extreme fatigue and weakness. I knew that something was not right and I did not feel well at all. I am now taking monthly injections for the rest of my life. I deal with chronic pain in my abdomen, which has lasted for more than a year and a half. After literally months of imaging studies and tests, doctors do not know why my side hurts the way it does and have not been able to give me any answers. Chemo can change the body in ways we do not yet know and problems can occur years afterwards.

I volunteer as a counselor to newly diagnosed women with Her2Neu+ breast cancer as well as those inquiring about mastectomy and reconstruction. My hope is that women will become more educated about this disease, it's causes and treatment effects, and that ultimately I may have a positive impact on someone faced with breast cancer.

Breast cancer has changed me in many ways for the better. I would never ask for this disease, but I do see it as a catalyst for change, empowerment, education and awareness. I will be working on The Scar Project committee in Washington D.C. for October 2012, where true awareness begins and where there are no pink ribbons.
